The carving is a stylized acanthus leaf of the Norwegian school of carving. It is fine and formal in it's presentation. Time spent carving far exceeds the price for it.

The box top is part of a frame, which cannot be seen since the top is set into the surrounding top sides. In other words: sunk into the top's sides to form a single piece.
