The profiles of actual maple leaves were drawn and painted in several layers using Japan colors. Copper gilding, silver gilding, and Dutch metals were applied to the different leaves giving them an individual character and appearance. The stems are mainly copper. All the various gilding was then given a patina to bring out more shades of color.
